What are the guidelines for choosing the right sunglasses?

Do you know how you should choose your sunglasses? With good weather we tend to spend more hours outdoors and we must protect our eyes from the sun’s rays and avoid sun exposure to prevent eye problems. There are many sunglasses and eyeglasses to choose from but only some are really quality like Versace sunglasses and eyeglasses. Anyway, the first thing you should do is choose the glasses following the advice of the optometrist. It is very important to make sure that the glasses we choose have an Ultra Violet (UV) filter.

What are the guidelines for choosing the right sunglasses?

The mount must be enveloping and we must choose wide lenses to prevent the entry of light. The material and the filter of the lenses must be: of quality, approved, and tested, since in this way, we will have a guarantee that they absorb 100% of UV radiation. Choosing polarized lenses has advantages as it eliminates reflections and glare. Light, once it is reflected on a surface, is polarized in one direction, causing the effect of glare or reflections. Hence, with polarized glasses we can see the bottom of the sea better from the outside, and it changes the tones of the water or other surfaces by eliminating reflections.

Regarding the intensity of the filter there are five categories (from 0 to 4). The higher the category, the darker the lens.

Category 4: the lens is darker and is suitable for very sunny days, as well as for going to the mountains or in the snow. It is not indicated for driving.

Category 3: suitable for sunny days and allow between 8 and 18% of light to pass through.

Category 2: indicated for sunny and cloudy days. They allow the entry of between 18 to 43% of light.

Category 0 and 1: they are the clearest lenses and therefore the least tinted. They should be used on days with less light.

Therefore, we recommend not to be carried away by aesthetics alone and to take into account all the previous recommendations when choosing glasses to protect our eye health and protect ourselves from the sun’s rays, especially in summer, when the UV index is higher.

Selective filters

In addition to conventional eyeglasses, there are selective filters for patients with pathologies that cause Low Vision (Macular Degeneration, High Myopia, Diabetic Retinopathy, Albinism,…). A selective filter controls the amount of light that enters the eye, increasing contrast and minimizing the glare suffered by patients with these pathologies.

They have a protection range between 400-585 nm of the visible light spectrum. This allows the entry of light necessary for vision, blocking the most harmful and annoying light. For this reason, patients with certain pathologies find a more comfortable vision with selective filters instead of conventional sunglasses.

In addition, certain filters can be photochromic and even polarized, so the protection and reduction of glare is accentuated.

There are still several other categories to consider but the two above are basic capital before moving on to the next stage.
